Laem Chabang Port (THLCH)
Laem Chabang Port is Thailand's largest and busiest deep-water seaport, located on the Eastern Seaboard approximately 120km southeast of Bangkok. Handling over 8 million TEUs annually, it serves as the primary gateway for Thailand's substantial manufacturing exports and is Southeast Asia's largest deep-water port facility.
The port features modern container terminals operated by major global operators including Hutchison, ESCO (Evergreen), and PSA, ensuring world-class handling efficiency. Its strategic location provides direct access to the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), Thailand's flagship industrial zone housing automotive plants, electronics factories, and petrochemical facilities.
For Australian-bound shipments, Laem Chabang offers multiple weekly direct services from major carriers including Evergreen, ONE, MSC, Maersk, and CMA CGM. The port's Free Trade Zone facilities accommodate bonded cargo and re-export operations, providing flexibility for complex supply chain arrangements.
Bangkok Port / Klong Toey (THBKK)
Bangkok Port, traditionally known as Klong Toey, is located along the Chao Phraya River in central Bangkok. While its capacity is limited compared to Laem Chabang due to draft restrictions and river navigation requirements, it remains relevant for certain cargo types and provides convenient access for inner-city exporters.
The port handles smaller vessels and break-bulk cargo, with some container services still operating. However, most containerized exports, particularly for automotive and electronics industries, have shifted to Laem Chabang. Bangkok Port may be suitable for LCL consolidations or specific cargo types where proximity to central Bangkok manufacturers provides advantages.
Port Selection Considerations
For Australian destinations, Laem Chabang is the recommended port for most shipments due to superior service frequency, competitive rates, and efficient handling. Bangkok Port should be considered only when specific circumstances favor its central location or for cargo types not suited to Laem Chabang facilities.
